According to Chinese customs statistics, from January to June this year, China's clothing (including clothing accessories, the same below) accumulated exports of 76.8 billion US dollars, down 4.1% year-on-year. In June, exports were 15.42 billion US dollars, down 14.4% year on year, and the decline continued to expand by 2.2 percentage points compared with the previous month. In the face of weak demand in major global markets, supply chain adjustment and many other unfavorable conditions, China's garment export industry still maintains a competitive advantage, expands emerging markets, creates a new trade model, and stabilizes the export scale. Compared with the pre-epidemic period, garment exports are still at a historically high level, with an increase of 21.2% over the first half of 2019.
China's garment export from January to June
Multiple factors have led to a wider decline in exports
The expansion of the year-on-year decline in clothing exports is mainly driven by four factors. First, the high base of the same period last year, and June 2022 is a faster month to promote the resumption of work and production after the epidemic. Second, the previous backlog effect ended. Concentrated shipments in March and April, double-digit export growth exceeded market expectations, but the backlog of orders began to end in May, and exports entered the downward range. Third, overseas demand is still slowing, exceeding expectations only the speed and extent of the slowdown. Fourth, the accelerated adjustment of the global supply chain pattern has led to important changes in China's export structure, and exports to traditional markets such as the United States and the European Union have declined significantly.
Woven garments export better than knitted garments
Woven clothing technology is relatively complex, the product added value is high, the degree of industrial transfer is lower than that of knitted clothing, and the export scale and growth rate are better than that of knitted clothing. From January to June, woven garment exports were 33.76 billion US dollars, slightly down 0.1% year-on-year; The number of exports was 6.16 billion, down 2.1% year-on-year; Export prices rose 2 per cent year on year. Knitwear exports were $33.3 billion, down 7.9% year on year; The number of exports was 9.98 billion, down 6.3% year-on-year; Export prices fell 1.8 per cent from a year earlier. The export of clothing accessories was 7.39 billion US dollars, up 2.6% year-on-year.
The decline in exports of cotton clothing to western markets accelerated
The accelerated "de-Sinification" of cotton products in the United States not only seriously affects China's exports of cotton products to the United States, but also has a negative effect on major markets such as the European Union and Japan. From January to June, China's cotton knitted clothing exports were 12.9 billion US dollars, down 15.2% year on year; The export of cotton woven clothing was 10.59 billion US dollars, down 4.5% year-on-year. Cotton knitted and woven clothing exports to the United States fell 32.7% and 24.3%, to the European Union fell 30.3% and 24.8%, and to Japan fell 26.1% and 20.3%, respectively. The export scale of chemical fiber clothing has far exceeded that of cotton clothing, and has maintained growth. From January to June, the export of chemical fiber knitted clothing was 16.28 billion US dollars, down slightly by 2.6% year-on-year; The export of chemical fiber woven garments reached 19.48 billion US dollars, up by 4.2%.
